Gordon Snidow
Gordon Snidow is known
as much for his talent as an historian, as for his technical ability as an
artist. One of the most acclaimed western artists of the 20th century,
Snidow was born in Paris Missouri in 1936 and grew up in the heartland
between there, Texas, Oklahoma and ultimately Arizona. Its from that life
experience he drew much of his inspiration and knowledge of ranching and the
landscapes of the West and Southwest U.S.
His public accolades are nearly too
numerous to list and include dozens of silver and gold medals and several
“Best of Show” awards. A founder and member of the Cowboy Artists of
America from 1969 to 1984, he retired from that organization as its top
medal winner.
His work resides in many permanent
collections including the Thomas Gilcrease Museum,
Buffalo Bill Historical Center, The
National Cowboy Hall of Fame, The Phoenix Art Museum and The Cowboy Artists
of America Museum.
His popular work includes his creation of
the “Coors Cowboy Collectors Series” and an album cover for Michael Martin
Murphy’s CD, “Cowboy Songs IV” in 1998.
Gordon continues to participate in such
events as the Prix de West Show at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and The
Cowboy Artists Of America Show at the Phoenix Art Museum. As an historian
Snidow is credited with creating a chronicle of pictures of a time preserved
into perpetuity through his art. The modern West is captured in his art
inclusive of (to borrow a pop culture reference) the good, the bad and the
ugly. Not as the artist wishes it to be, but as it is.
